CONFLICT RESOLUTION SPECIALIST PROGRAM

June 23-26, 2008

The Conflict Resolution Specialist Program pilots a leadership experience that introduces advocates to models that integrate social justice theory and conflict management techniques into everyday student life practices.  The Specialist Program is open to all professionals with an interest in promoting conflict resolution in higher education and does not require a prerequisite or mediation certification.  In depth topics will include a historic review of conflict management in higher education followed by a broad sampling of diverse student life programs tailored to the needs of colleges and universities across the country.  Participants will explore conflict coaching techniques and instruments successfully being used to teach conflict resolution skills to students, and share facilitated problem solving techniques designed to help students and groups develop solutions to their own conflicts.  Transferable restorative justice practices will be featured with an emphasis on skill building around multi-party disputes, multi-cultural competence, victim advocacy, and restoring community.  Participants wishing to develop conflict resolution options to complement existing student life practices will be offered an extensive nuts and bolts recipe for evaluating campus needs, identifying stakeholders, building campus support and designing, promoting, and assessing sustainable, socially just programs.

The Academy’s Conflict Resolution Specialist Program promises to challenge, engage and uplift participants with new and meaningful ways to apply conflict management practices that support social justice and is  aligned with the goals of ASJA’s ADR Task Force* and the Diversity Action Committee.

*For clarity, social justice is defined by the ADR Task Force as building student communities which afford equal, safe opportunity and access to campus resources by accounting for social identity, power, privilege and oppression in the administration of law, policy, conduct codes and related societal structures.  Conflict Resolution is used broadly as an inclusive term to reflect the wide and growing range of creative practices, policies and procedures that advance a competent, practical understanding of the nature of conflict and the application of conflict management on today’s campuses.
